A Week in the Life of a First Year Bruin: Sophia Wilkof

Trying to figure out UCLA reminded me of tasting sushi for the first time. I knew I was going to like it eventually because everyone before me loved it, but that first bite was terrifying and it was a tough taste to get used to. I don't know how well thought out that analogy was...but just go with it.

I've been here for exactly one week and 6 days now and the transition has not been easy. I've been waking up hours before my first class because it takes me 15 minutes to walk there and 15 minutes to find the building and the room. What will my favorite route be? I don't know which dining halls are the best so I try out a different one for every meal and order a different item on the menu. Which will be my favorite place to pig out?  When it comes time to study, I pick a new spot so I can try and find the coziest one. Where will my place be?  I trek up Bruin Walk and grab every flyer handed to me because who knows?
What will I be a part of?

There are so many questions I have yet to answer about what these next four years will bring. However there is one thing I do know for sure. Hillel is there for me and I already have a community there. Now I know that sounds like a cheesy plug but I'm being perfectly honest! As much as I feel I'm struggling to find my place here, I know I have it a million times easier than a lot of other first years because I actually have a place to go where I know people! How many freshmen can say that already?

It helps that I've been honored and blessed to be an intern through Hillel and Masa. Now I know you're wondering "How do you already have a position when you're only a freshman!?" Let me explain.

After I graduated High School in 2011, I took a gap year in Israel. I studied in Jerusalem at an all girl's school called Yeud and did community service as a medical clown in the pediatric ward of the Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital. Yup, you heard me right, I was a clown! So besides being able to blow balloon animals like a champ, I also had the best year of my life! The program I was on is part of a greater umbrella organization called Masa. {Insert Shameless plug here:} Masa is an organization that helps young adults find a long-term Israel experience that matches their interests and goals! After my Masa program I was asked to apply for the  Masa internship through UCLA Hillel.

My job on campus is to inform people about Masa and help them find programs that are right for them whether study abroad, or post-grad! The best part about  this opportunity? I was flown to St Louis. for the annual Hillel Engagement institute where hundreds of Hillel student leaders and staff are brought together to train for the year to come. When I got there, I was pleased to discover that there were 17 smiling UCLA Hillel students there waiting for me! yay for utter intimidation! Although I was the only newbie, I was immediately welcomed into the community and by the time the conference was over, I had gained some valuable leadership skills and 17 friends at UCLA. All before I had even stepped foot onto campus!

And while I still feel lost and overwhelmed at this huge school, I feel so lucky to have a purpose here! I can not wait to help my peers experience a life-changing journey in Israel, just as I did. So while my questions are unanswered for the time being, I know I have a place to go and a goal to fulfill. I can't wait to do my very best here, as a Jew and as a Bruin!

And in case you're wondering, sushi is now my favorite food and the love of my life!

Chag Sameach :)
